Short Summary
Motion Support for Vista
Officially, Motion is supporting Vista on the LS800 and LE1600 (and future models). You can find information about that here: Vista Support
Why Install Windows Vista™
I installed Windows Vista™ on my HP TC 1100 . I was pretty happy with that, and so when I got a chance to pick up a Motion M1400 with very similar specifications I was tempted and succumbed.
For more reasons to switch see Tablet PC Features in Vista
General Impression
Works as well or better than XP. Tablet PC (Pen) related enhancements - although seemingly minor - make a huge difference for me. I have done some testing and it seems that without major tweaking of power settings, Vista may consume batteries at about 7% faster rate than Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. (both running in typical power saving modes). For me, the difference in productivity more than makes up for a 10-20 minutes of run time.

Things that work
- Windows Vista™ Basic User interface
- Buttons
- Tab Tip
- Journal
- Screen Rotation (Mobility Center)
- Esc
- Tab
- Bluetooth (If your install the Motion Dashboard).
- SD and SDHC (8GB tested) work via a Pcmcia adapter card
Things that DO NOT Work (and some workarounds)
- Aero Glass, Flip, 3D (Video works fine, but you do not get transparent windows, or previews in the task bar).
- Fingerprint Reader: Software (Omnipass) and drivers for this device will not install under Vista. There is a OmniPass 5.00.16 (Trial Version) from Motion's site. Current upgrade price is $25 vs. $50 full retail
- Authentec AES2501 driver will install. This supports the device (gives you ability to scroll with the finger print reader), but this does not include any application software for it.
- FingerPrint driver from ASUS
- Bluetooth does not work
- Install the Motion Dashboard. Dashboard doesn't work, but install it if you want Bluetooth.
- Motion Dashboard (for the M1400 does not work
- Workaround Motion Dashboard for the LE1700 does work ... or ...
- Windows Vista Mobility Center for most of the same functionality. Note if you need Bluetooth, you will want to install either the M1400 or LE1700 versions of the Motion Dashboard.
- External Monitor or projector in Clone Mode will not work. It works fine as Extended Desktop. (See Video Drivers below for a workaround.
Preparation
- BIOS Make sure that you are running the latest BIOS (A05 at time of writing). I suggest you use the Windows XP Winphlash utility BEFORE you do the switch to Vista. A bios update is a critical operation and not one I would do under Vista without a program writte specifically written for Vista.
Clean Install or Upgrade
I have did a clean install into a second partition. The machine is new to me and I wanted to live in a dual boot mode so I could compare performance. So far the Vista experience seems similar to WinXP Tablet PC Edition.
I have not tried an upgrade install.
LAN Drivers
Wired and wireless lan worked without revision using the drivers installed by Vista.
Motion Utilities
Dashboard installs but fails to run. Note: I could not get Bluetooth connectivity until I installed the Dashboard. So even though you cannot use Dashboard if you want to use Bluetooth, you have to install it.
Buttons
The Vista Tablet Buttons configuration works fine with the Motion M1400 buttons.
Hint: You can't use Dashboard - Use Mobility Center
- Start
- Control Panel
- Mobile PC
- Tablet PC Settings
- Set tablet buttons to perform certain tasks
- in the window - scroll down to HotKey 1 (normally assigned to Dashboard).
- click Change button
Change the file name to mblctr.exe . - Then OK your way out.
Sound Drivers
The Vista install does not install the sound card drivers. Install the drivers from Motion.
Unfortunately the IntelliSonic DXEC Speech Enhancement 2.0.1 drivers will not install even in compatibility mode.
Video Drivers
The Vista Drivers that are installed by default do not support mirrored video on a second monitor or projector. You can use a second display in extended screen mode.
Mirrored Output
Note - previous notes about using the XP (3762) driver have been removed because it turns out that these revert to the Vista driver (4656) when you reboot.
Intel 82865 Driver
I have had success getting cloned mode with the built in Intel 82865 driver.
Note: Update, you may have to change the drivers as shown below, and reboot with the external monitor or projector attached every time you need to run in mirrored mode. Not ideal, but it makes it possible to use a projector. It adds about 3-5 minutes to the preparation time required just before starting a presentation.
